Indian Railways is headquartered at New Delhi, the capital of India. The Indian Railways was founded on 16 May 1853, when the first train departed from Mumbai to Thane. The Indian Railways is further divided into 17 subdivisions for ease of control and operations.

The South Central Railway is one of the 16 railroad zones in India. South Central Railway was framed on 2 October 1966 when Hubli and Vijayawada Divisions of Southern Railway and Secunderabad and Sholapur Divisions of Central Railway were cut out and converged into another Zone. 

In this manner, the Guntakal Division of Southern Railway was converged with South Central Railways on 2 October 1977 and the Sholapur Division was remerged with Central Railway. Secunderabad Division was part into two Divisions viz. Secunderabad and Hyderabad on 17 February 1978. Taking after redesign of zones and Divisions with impact from 1 April 2003, two new Divisions viz., Guntur and Nanded were operationalised properly exchanging Hubli Division to recently framed South Western Railway.

Now,South Central Railways has 6 Divisions, which are Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Guntakal, Guntur and Nanded. South Central Railway overwhelmingly serves the condition of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra and to a restricted degree, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh states. South Central Railway Zone is the second most noteworthy income acquiring zone in Indian Railways after Northern Railway Zone. The income of South Central Railway Zone is about 110 billion.
